Eleven a.m.

Still in my dressing gown. Where is my pride?

And the door bell has rung. Ouch! Better hide!

It’s lucky I have a number of trees.

Do please stop ringing, and go away please!

Out in my dressing gown, strolling about –

oh, so embarrassing when I’m caught out!

Mysteries

Ever seen a flower open?

Of course your answer will be ‘No’,

except, perhaps on television

and in a natural history show.

Plants do things behind our backs –

they do not welcome witnesses.

They far prefer their secret lives.

It’s one of life’s great mysteries.

Petals always close and open

without our ever noticing.

I often wonder why they’re shy

and always hiding everything.

Only a stop motion programme

can take us to their hidden world,

showing us how flowers open

and how their blossoms are unfurled.

Plants are private, all have secrets

and ones they don’t want us to know.

We’ll never truly understand them –

one reason why I love them so.
